Travel Curious Often: An In-depth, CURIOUS Look at Worldwide Destinations Published Online, Monthly

PENSACOLA, Fla., Jan. 31, 2012 -- Featuring insightful writing, head-turning photographs, and colorful local history, Travel Curious Often (www.travelcuriousoften.com) is an exhilarating new website that captures the essence of destination travel.

Globe trotter Marla Norman-Freytag is the creator of Travel Curious Often. Her twenty-plus years in international publishing and rich travel experiences have shaped an informed perspective as well as provided access to personalities and cultural sites throughout the world.

"When it comes to traveling, my husband and I are insatiably curious," says Norman-Freytag. "We aim to really get inside a place. What we don't want is a quick 'been there, done that' touristy checklist. Travel Curious Often reflects that 'get inside' philosophy. We take our readers on joy rides that go off the beaten path. Together, we explore local history, architecture, and the cuisine of each destination."

Restaurant recommendations include interviews with local chefs, while the monthly "Curious & Thirsty" feature takes readers on diverse excursions to coffee plantations, vodka distilleries, Bangkok bars, or wineries. Lodging recommendations provide a wide range of rates and styles -- from cute New York City inns and Texas ranches, to five-star castles in Europe. Especially helpful is an innovative "Pronunciation" tab that allows travelers to listen to names of relevant items and places (like Krakow) all pronounced by native speakers.

Even armchair travelers have a chance to explore. Features such as "Reel Travel" include recommendations for films shot on locations around the world. "Book Bag" highlights interviews with international authors. Videos, cooking presentations, and online shopping also provide authentic experiences.

Norman-Freytag's stylish writing couples fact and humor to make for entertaining and informative commentary. Local writers and other curious travelers also contribute to the mix. The result is a plethora of domestic and international destinations from which readers can put together an adventurous itinerary, or just simply daydream.
Travel Curious Often (www.travelcuriousoften.com) blends vivid design and photographs, informed experiences and pleasurable reading into a world-class website.

About WhereToStay.com
Know before you go...®

WhereToStay.com was the first website to allow travelers the ability to post reviews. In 1995, long before most other travel sites were around, WhereToStay.com saw the power of letting travelers share their experiences with each other.

What started as a review site has transformed over the last 15 years into a comprehensive Caribbean guide. WhereToStay.com's island experts focus most of their time on villa and hotel rentals, but have first-hand knowledge of the islands they represent. That information is translated onto the website through tabs directing users "Where to Stay," "What to Do" and "Where to Eat." The site also offers interactive maps, videos, pictures and of course travelers' reviews. It's a one-stop-shop with everything you need to know before you go on a Caribbean vacation!

George Washington's Home Opens New Food Exhibition President's Day Weekend: Hoecakes & Hospitality: Cooking with Martha Washington

Press Preview for this Special Exhibition - Feb. 16

MOUNT VERNON, Va., Jan. 26, 2012 -- Beginning February 18, 2012, Mount Vernon invites visitors to experience a behind-the-scenes look at the Washingtons' kitchen through the new exhibition, Hoecakes & Hospitality: Cooking with Martha Washington. On display inside the Donald W. Reynolds Museum, this temporary exhibition celebrates food at Mount Vernon and Martha Washington's role as early America's premier hostess. Following food from the Estate's field to kitchen to table, visitors will see recipes and cookbooks that Martha treasured, pots that simmered in her kitchen, and fine tablewares that made Mount Vernon's dining room fit for a president. For the first time ever, visitors to the Museum will experience scents as they explore the exhibition - smelling cinnamon, coffee, herbs and warm bread. Hoecakes & Hospitality: Cooking with Martha Washington is included with general Estate admission: adults, $15; children ages 6-11, $7; and children under 5 are admitted free.

"Visitors to Mount Vernon have long enjoyed seeing the Washingtons' dining rooms, kitchen, gardens, orchards, and slave quarters," said curator Susan P. Schoelwer. "Unlike the anonymous pots and pans found in most historic houses, this exhibit offers a rare, intimate look at a specific 18th-century kitchen, thanks to the actual pots and pans, kettles and canisters lovingly preserved by several generations of Martha Washington descendants."
Hoecakes & Hospitality: Cooking with Martha Washington features more than 125 fascinating objects amassed from Mount Vernon's collections, other institutions and private lenders. Among the highlights are the Washingtons' dinner bell, heart-shaped waffle iron, a vente-sized mug of Chinese porcelain, coffee mill, three-foot olive jar, presidential dinner invitations and other kitchen items. In addition to displaying Martha Washington's cookbook, the exhibition will feature George Washington's account of the food staples used by the household. Few 18th century domestic utensils survive today; most wore out from service and were discarded since they had little monetary value. Martha Washington's descendants carefully preserved many objects from Mount Vernon's kitchen because of their association with George and Martha Washington.

In the exhibit, visitors will learn how the first "first lady" managed to feed hundreds of guests – in a world without refrigerators, microwaves or running water. The Washingtons were known as taste setters for the new nation. Guests at the Washingtons' dinner table varied from foreign dignitaries like the Marquis de Lafayette, to Abigail Adams, to artists including Charles Willson Peale. Recipe cards featuring the modern versions of Washington favorites will be available for visitors to take home and try in their own kitchens.

Even though Martha Washington oversaw all aspects of food production and service at Mount Vernon, it was the slaves who were toiling in the fields and kitchen to provide the meals. Mount Vernon's dinner tables would have remained empty without their labor. The exhibition takes a closer look at the slaves who worked in Mount Vernon's kitchen and includes a detailed timeline of the cooks' 16-hour day. On display will be a reproduction livery coat, waistcoat, and breeches that Mount Vernon's enslaved waiters wore when serving dinner.

AAA Adds Nine Hotels and Seven Restaurants to Five Diamond List for 2012

An exclusive 179 establishments across the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean attained the travel authority's highest property rating.

ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 20, 2012  -- AAA announced today the 126 lodgings and 53 restaurants that earned the AAA/CAA Five Diamond Award® designation for 2012. These select establishments represent just 0.3 percent of the total 59,000 AAA/CAA Approved and Diamond Rated lodgings and restaurants.

Of note among the 16 new additions for 2012 are first-ever Five Diamond establishments for Rhode Island and Antigua. In the restaurant category, New York tops the list for growth with three new Five Diamond establishments. California is the only state to grow in both categories, with two additional lodgings and one restaurant.

During the past year, eight Five Diamond restaurants closed their doors, at least temporarily. "This 15 percent drop illustrates the speed at which the concept of luxury dining is shifting in response to the economy, changing diner preferences and a corporate redefining of acceptable luxury levels for business reimbursement," said Michael Petrone, director, AAA Tourism Information Development. "Today the service style is more casual, with a greater focus on providing a high-quality, individualized, value-focused experience. The addition of seven Five Diamond restaurants reflects the rebound that began for this segment during the latter half of 2011."

AAA's professional inspectors, ideally positioned to observe emerging hospitality trends, noted other changes in store for 2012. For hotels, a prevalent trend is creating a home-away-from-home environment, according to AAA inspectors. Another growth area is "smarter" hotel rooms that learn guests' habits as they use a central remote to control everything from heating and air to lights, curtains, music and wakeup calls. In the restaurant industry, prevailing themes include more natural ingredients, locally sourced foods and healthier meal options. These include rustic fare — simple dishes with fresh ingredients — made in-house and new twists on comfort foods such as a "dusting" of dried, powdered fruits or vegetables to add texture and flavor, rather than heavy sauces.

"Five Diamond lodgings feature extraordinary physical attributes and meticulous personalized attention, and Five Diamond restaurants feature world-class service and imaginative menu selections using the finest ingredients," said Petrone. "It is an amazing accomplishment to achieve and maintain this level of quality and service, and AAA is pleased to honor these properties with a Five Diamond Rating."

New Five Diamond Lodgings:ARIA Sky Suites, Las Vegas, Nev.
The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, Bluffton, S.C.
Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, Jumby Bay, Antigua
Mandarin Oriental, Miami, Fla.
Montage Beverly Hills, Beverly Hills, Calif.
Ocean House, Watch Hill, R.I.
The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Calif.
The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
The St. Regis Houston, Houston, Texas

New Five Diamond Restaurants:Blue Hill at Stone Barns, Tarrytown, N.Y.
Del Posto, New York, N.Y.
Herons Restaurant, Cary, N.C. (in the Umstead Hotel & Spa)
The Kitchen Restaurant, Sacramento, Calif.
Marea, New York, N.Y.
Menton, Boston, Mass.
Restaurant Initiale, Quebec, Canada

Noteworthy for 2012:
  • Three lodgings have maintained the Five Diamond Rating for 36 consecutive years – since 1976 when AAA first introduced the Diamond Ratings for accommodations: The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • The restaurant with the longest Five Diamond tenure, 24 consecutive years, since 1988, is The Inn at Little Washington Dining Room in Washington, Va.
For more information about Diamond Ratings and a complete list of Five Diamond lodgings and restaurants, visit NewsRoom.AAA.com.

AAA Approved and Diamond Rated hotel and restaurant listings can be found in the AAA TourBook® guides available at AAA and CAA offices across the continent. They can be accessed online at AAA.com/Travel and through downloadable eTourBook(SM) guides at AAA.com/ebooks. Smartphone users can locate Diamond Rated establishments using the free AAA TripTik® Mobile app or AAA Mobile Web at AAA.com/mobile.

Continuing a 75-year tradition, AAA's professionally trained inspectors use published guidelines to conduct unannounced property evaluations. AAA rates more properties than any other rating entity and is the only rating system that covers the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. It is one of only two that conduct physical, on-site evaluations, assigning AAA/CAA Approved lodgings and restaurants One to Five AAA Diamonds. Travelers can access information about AAA inspections and Diamond Ratings at AAA.com/Diamonds.

As North America's largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 53 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com.

New Online Magazine Caters to Globally Conscious Travel Community

Sustainable development company Amble Resorts revamps their travel blog of three years, welcoming travel enthusiasts to a revolutionary source of inspiration and conversation

CHICAGO, Jan. 13, 2012  -- As the year kicks off, a new online travel magazine is offering travelers to Central America and beyond a unique resource for insider advice, inspiring true stories, and stunning photography. The Ambler encompasses the best of travel guidebooks, personal travel blogs, and traveler reviews while offering members of the travel community a forum for conversation.

Amble Resorts' travel blog began in 2008 as an in-house conversation covering trends in sustainability, applications for green technology at the company's flagship eco-development project on Isla Palenque, and the natural, historical and cultural attractions of Panama.

Last fall, after three years of growth, Amble Resorts re-launched The Ambler as an innovative new online resource for travelers. Featuring an impressive catalogue of informative articles and firsthand storytelling from up-and-coming travel writers, The Ambler is bridging the gap between traditional travel publications and online forums. Another distinguishing aspect of The Ambler is its commitment to encouraging others to pursue truly immersive experiences, while respecting the natural and cultural attractions of their destinations.

The environmentally conscious and culturally sensitive perspective found on The Ambler is also pioneering advocacy for tourism in emerging markets with information on off-the-beaten path destinations for which reliable information is currently lacking. Specific destination coverage on The Ambler currently focuses on Belize and Panama, filling a gap left by National Geographic and other established travel resources. Thanks to The Ambler's dedicated team of contributors and travel insiders, visitors to these regions in general and Amble's luxury eco-resorts in particular stand to be better-informed than ever before in their pursuit of meaningful travel. "Emerging markets are frequently neglected by mainstream travel sites," says Benjamin Loomis, Founder and President of Amble Resorts. "With The Ambler, we're creating a resource that offers comprehensive, thorough, insider information on these often overlooked regions. We hope to instill in travelers an appreciation for the natural and cultural significance of these emerging travel destinations."

The unique melange of travel stories, informative articles, tips from industry professionals, and stunning travel photography creates an online experience as immersive as the travel experiences Amble Resorts hopes to provide through its eco-resorts and sustainable vacation home communities. With a commitment to sustainable development practices and cultural awareness, Amble Resorts seeks to create life-changing experiences that allow travelers deeper connection to the earth, other peoples, and each other. Each boutique resort and vacation home celebrates the spectacular natural beauty, authentic culture, and unique spirit of its individual location.

The Ambler has already attracted a wide-ranging audience, from backpackers to expatriates to the most discerning luxury travelers, to share their individual travel experiences and learn about the destinations they hope to discover. Already The Ambler has been receiving high praise from the people it values most: those looking to explore the world by taking the road less-traveled. Meg Chappell, a student of Manhattanville College in New York, found Amble Resorts' online travel magazine to be "the most useful thing I've read on Panama" while planning her two-week vacation in Central America. She also commended the site on its "great off-the-beaten-path advice."

Fostering community is another top priority of Amble Resorts' revamped travel blog. The Ambler encourages dialogue between individuals interested in learning more about sustainable travel in emerging tourism destinations. Members of the Amble Resorts team also participate in a variety of other travel forums, such as Travel Talk on Twitter (#TTOT), a weekly discussion hosted by top travel bloggers. The Ambler is hosting several contests in early 2012 to generate excitement about life-changing travel in the coming year. Those who join the dynamic travel community on The Ambler will enjoy more opportunities than ever before to pursue immersion in nature and culture, with a treasury of adventure stories to inspire them in their journeys.

Scheduled May through October, the itineraries range from seven to 15 days and also visit the region during the height of the fall foliage display as summer turns to autumn and leaves change to vibrant hues of red, orange and gold. Veendam repositions to the region in 2012, increasing Holland America Line's capacity and making it possible for more travelers to experience one of nature's most impressive showings.

"Our Canada/New England itineraries are always popular, and by adding Veendam to the area during the fall foliage season more travelers are able to see this beautiful region during this special time of year," said Richard Meadows, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs. "Maasdam is there throughout the summer as well, making it the perfect cruise for friends, couples, solo travelers and families looking to explore an interesting travel destination that's close to home."

Maasdam begins the season with a 15-day northbound cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. During the voyage, guests will visit Charleston, S.C.; Newport, R.I.; Bar Harbor, Maine; Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Gaspe and Sept-Iles, Saguenay; and Quebec City, Quebec, before arriving at Montreal. Highlights include an overnight call at Quebec City, Holland America Line's highest rated port of call, and the premium line's only call at Sept-Iles this season.

From May 12 through the Sept. 29 departure, Maasdam offers 15 seven-day sailings between Montreal and Boston, with calls at Quebec City, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax and Bar Harbor. The itineraries feature scenic cruising along the St. Lawrence River and make an ideal option for families looking to take a summer cruise without traveling abroad.

Maasdam concludes the season with a 13-day sailing Oct. 6 from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale. Ports of call include Quebec City, Saguenay, Baie-Comeau, Gaspe, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax and Port Canaveral, Florida.

During the height of the 2012 fall foliage season, Eurodam will sail three 10-day cruises in September and October between New York and Quebec City. The ship will call at Newport, Rhode Island; Gloucester (Boston), Mass.; Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Saguenay. The itinerary also features an overnight call at Quebec City and scenic cruising along Saguenay Fjord.

On Oct. 14 Eurodam will depart on a 13-day cruise from Quebec City to Fort Lauderdale. The cruise begins with an overnight aboard ship in Quebec City and then sails for Saguenay, Baie-Comeau, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, Bar Harbor, Gloucester (Boston) and Newport.

Veendam begins its Canada/New England season with a 13-day cruise from New York to Montreal Sept. 2. The ship will call at Gloucester, Bar Harbor, St. John, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Gaspe, Saguenay and Quebec City along the way. Guests on this itinerary will enjoy an overnight call at Quebec City before arriving at Montreal.

Grammy-Winning Saxophonist Kenny G to Host Special Celebrity Cruises Alaska Sailing in 2013

Cool jazz, cool brand, cool environment combine to create rare vacation opportunity

MIAMI, Jan. 5, 2012 -- Grammy Award-winning artist Kenny G has chartered modern luxury line Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Millennium to create a special vacation experience in Alaska, May 17-24, 2013. The world-renowned saxophonist will not only offer multiple performances during the sailing, but also will mix and mingle with guests onboard throughout the cruise. Other recognized artists yet to be announced will perform during the sailing, as well.

In a recording career spanning nearly three decades, Kenny G is the biggest-selling instrumentalist of all time, with sales of more than 75-million records worldwide, and more than a dozen climbs to the top of Billboard's contemporary jazz chart. In the past year alone, Kenny performed in more than 100 concerts in the U.S., Asia and Russia.
He continued his iconic status with recent appearances on Saturday Night Live, performing with Foster the People, played a prominent role in pop artist Katy Perry's video hit, "Last Friday Night," and appeared on several Audi TV commercials featured during the 2011 Super Bowl. Since the early 1980s, Kenny G's combination of unparalleled instrumental talent and enduring melodies have resulted in him being recognized as one of the most successful music icons of his generation.

"I'm excited for the opportunity to cruise with my closest fans aboard Celebrity Millennium," said Kenny G. This cruise will allow me to spend quality time and get to know the fans onboard, just as they've gotten to know me through my music. Sailing with them on a week-long Celebrity Cruises vacation will be a highlight of my career, and I can't wait to share the journey."

"We had the thrill of having Kenny perform on our newest Solstice Class ship, Celebrity Silhouette, during the ship's Stateside debut in November, and watching the crowd interact, hearing his exceptional musical talent, and observing his engaging personality was so exciting," said Celebrity Cruises Director of Corporate Sales and Charters Ron Gulaskey. "He's approachable, funny, smart and interesting. The opportunity to sail with him for a week, and experience all this up-close, will create incredible memories for the fans onboard."
